British Virgin Islands: structures that outlive you

BVI companies, trusts and succession arrangements that keep ownership and control continuous, planned together with where you actually live.

  • BVI companies and trusts
  • Succession and continuity
  • Residence planned alongside

Overview

Why the BVI matters in a plan

The British Virgin Islands is best known for its companies. Used well, a BVI structure keeps ownership and control of a business or an investment portfolio continuous, even when something happens to you.

BVI companies, wills, reserve-director arrangements, share classes and trusts can each play a part. We select and coordinate the pieces that suit your businesses, investments and succession goals, including structures in other countries.

Implementation covers company formation, registered-agent coordination, governance, beneficial-ownership reporting and ongoing maintenance. Banking and relocation are planned at the same time, so your personal residence and your business ownership work together.

At a glance

The BVI in six lines

Tax system

The Inland Revenue Department collects payroll tax on employment income, stamp duty and property tax, among others. We confirm how your income would be treated if you live there.

Residency routes

Residence arrangements coordinated alongside your ownership and succession plan.

Citizenship

A British Overseas Territory. Residence, belonger status and citizenship are separate questions.

Where companies, banks and trusts sit

BVI companies and trusts for continuity of ownership and control, with banking and other structures wherever they fit best.

Good fit for

Owners of businesses and portfolios who want clear succession, and families holding assets across several countries.

Watch out for

Beneficial-ownership reporting, annual fees and substance rules. A BVI company does not remove tax in the country where you live.

General information, not legal or tax advice. Immigration and tax rules, amounts and processing times change; we confirm the current requirements for your specific case during your Global Strategy.

What it involves

BVI structures: the building blocks

We do not quote programme thresholds for the BVI because its role in most plans is structural. As checked September 2026.

  • BVI companies to hold businesses and investments, with share classes where control and economics need to be split.
  • Reserve-director arrangements and wills so the company can keep acting if a sole director dies.
  • Trusts for succession and family governance.
  • Beneficial-ownership filings made through the registered agent, under the reporting rules set by the BVI Financial Services Commission.
  • Maintenance: registered agent, annual fees, governance and ownership updates, each with a named owner and a recurring cost.

Government fees, registered-agent fees and professional fees are separate costs and are quoted after the Global Strategy.

Done for you

How we coordinate your BVI structure

You make the decisions. We coordinate the registered agent and the legal and tax professionals involved, so the structure fits your businesses, investments and succession goals.

  1. Structure and succession review

We review what you own, who should control it and what should happen if something happens to you, and select the BVI companies, share classes, reserve-director arrangements, wills or trusts that fit.

  2. Documentation

We give you the document list for the structure and coordinate identity, source-of-funds and ownership records with the registered agent.

  3. Formation and registered-agent setup

Companies and trusts are formed through a licensed BVI registered agent, with the beneficial-ownership filings the rules require.

  4. Ongoing governance, reporting and maintenance

Annual fees, beneficial-ownership updates, governance and ownership changes, each with a named owner and a recurring cost.

BVI FAQ

Questions about the British Virgin Islands

Ask us your question
Does a BVI company mean I pay no tax?

No. Where you live and where the income is earned still decide most of your tax. A BVI company is a tool for ownership, control and succession, not a way to make tax disappear.

What is a reserve director?

A person named to step in as director if the sole director dies. It helps a company keep operating without waiting for a probate process.

Do I need to live in the BVI to use a BVI structure?

No. Many clients live elsewhere. If you do want to live there, we plan the residence and the structure together.

I am American. How is a BVI company taxed for me?

US persons have specific reporting and tax rules for foreign companies. We coordinate them with US tax professionals. See leaving the United States.
