Honduras: pensioner and rentista residence
Residence routes set out in the migration law for people living on a pension or on steady income, with coastlines, mountains and colonial towns a short flight from the US.
Overview
Why people look at Honduras
Honduras’ migration law sets out residence categories for pensioners, who live on a permanent pension from abroad, and rentistas, who live on permanent and stable income. Each has a minimum monthly amount written into the statute.
We assess which route suits you, organize the income and family documentation, and manage the application with immigration professionals in Honduras.
The move is coordinated with your income sources, business interests, investments and banking. The plan also covers your departure from your current country and where your companies and asset-protection structures should sit, which may remain outside Honduras.
At a glance
Honduras in six lines
| Tax system | The migration law exempts pensioner and rentista residents from income tax on the pension or income their permit is based on. Other income is reviewed for your specific sources. |
|---|---|
| Residency routes | Pensioner and rentista residence, alongside investor and family categories. |
| Citizenship | Naturalization is a separate process with its own residence and other requirements. We map it if a passport is part of the goal. |
| Where companies, banks and trusts sit | Wherever they serve the plan. Companies and asset-protection structures can remain outside Honduras. |
| Good fit for | Retirees and people with steady income from abroad who want a warm climate close to the US. |
| Watch out for | These routes are not for local employment, and giving up the status can mean paying the taxes that were exempted. |

What is the difference between the pensioner and rentista routes?
A pensioner shows a permanent pension from abroad. A rentista shows permanent and stable income, which can come from abroad or from investments in the Honduran financial system. The monthly minimums differ.
Is my pension taxed in Honduras?
The migration law exempts the pension or income a pensioner or rentista permit is based on from Honduran income tax. Other income is treated under the general rules, and a foreign payment alone does not make income foreign-source. We review your sources before you move.
Will moving to Honduras end my taxes at home?
Your residence abroad and your tax position at home are separate questions. US citizens remain taxable in the United States wherever they live; see leaving the United States. Canadians who leave need to plan for departure tax and the end of Canadian residency; see leaving Canada.
Can my family be included?
The law allows the spouse, minor children, dependent adult children and parents of the main applicant to be included, each with their own documents.
