Nicaragua: residence for retirees
Temporary residence categories for retirees and rentistas with income from abroad, in a country of lakes, volcanoes and colonial cities.
Overview
Why retirees look at Nicaragua
Nicaragua provides temporary residence categories for retirees and rentistas. Current income and document requirements must be confirmed with the migration authority before application. Law 1228, in force since 29 November 2024, repealed the earlier migration-law article and placed retirees and rentistas in temporary-residence categories (Law 1228, articles primero and tercero (La Gaceta, 29 November 2024, pp. 12378 and 12393)). The separate law that set the old income minimums and incentives, Law 694, was repealed in August 2024 (Law 1210, articles 38 and 41).
We assess eligibility, organize the pension and supporting personal documentation, and coordinate the residence application and the relocation with the relevant professionals in Nicaragua.
The move is integrated with your retirement income, investments, banking and succession arrangements. The wider plan can keep or establish companies and asset-protection structures in other countries, according to your circumstances.

| Residency routes | Nicaragua provides temporary residence categories for retirees and rentistas. Current income and document requirements must be confirmed with the migration authority before application. |
| Citizenship | Naturalization is a separate process with its own residence and other requirements. We map it if a passport is part of the goal. |

| Good fit for | Retirees with a stable pension who want a lower cost of living and a slower pace. |
| Watch out for | The rules have changed before. Every plan starts by checking what applies on the day you file. |

What is the minimum pension for residence in Nicaragua?
The figures many guides still quote come from Law 694, which was repealed in August 2024. Nicaragua provides temporary residence categories for retirees and rentistas. Current income and document requirements must be confirmed with the migration authority before application.
Does the pension have to come from a government?
The category covers stable, permanent income from abroad, not only government pensions. Which sources are accepted, and how they must be documented, is confirmed with the migration authority for your case.
Will moving to Nicaragua end my taxes at home?
Your residence abroad and your tax position at home are separate questions. US citizens remain taxable in the United States wherever they live; see leaving the United States. Canadians who leave need to plan for departure tax and the end of Canadian residency; see leaving Canada.
What happens to my estate plan when I move?
Relocation is the moment to review how your assets pass to your family. We coordinate your succession arrangements with the move, and they can sit in other jurisdictions.
