Georgia: territorial tax at the edge of Europe

A small country between Europe and Asia that leaves individuals' foreign-source income untaxed, with straightforward banking for non-residents.

  • Foreign-source income exempt
  • Nonresident banking
  • Residency and relocation

Overview

Why clients look at Georgia

Georgia's Tax Code exempts income, including gains, received by a resident individual that is not Georgian-source income. Georgian-source income is taxed. The line between the two depends on where the work is done and where the asset or business sits, not on where the money is paid.

Tax residence is a matter of days: an individual who stays in Georgia 183 days or more in any continuous 12-month period ending in the tax year is resident for that year. Immigration residence is a separate question, handled through the residence permit routes.

Georgian banks are also used by non-residents. We prepare the onboarding file and coordinate with the bank on identity, tax residence, activity and source of funds.

US citizens remain taxable in the US wherever they live. See leaving the United States. Canadians should plan the departure tax first: leaving Canada.

Georgia FAQ

Questions about Georgia

Ask us your question
Does Georgia tax my foreign income?

A resident individual's income that is not Georgian-source is exempt under the Tax Code. Income from work done in Georgia or from Georgian assets is taxed. We check how your income is sourced.

Is residence permit the same as tax residence?

No. Tax residence depends on days present, 183 or more in a continuous 12-month period. A residence permit is an immigration status. You can have one without the other.

Can I open a Georgian bank account as a non-resident?

Georgian banks do onboard non-residents, each under its own rules. We prepare the file and coordinate with the bank. Approval is the bank's decision.

Will moving to Georgia end my taxes at home?

For Canadians, a properly planned departure can end Canadian residence, with a departure tax to plan for. US citizens remain taxable in the US wherever they live.
