FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about relocating, residency, citizenship and how we work.
Is reducing taxes by relocating legal?
Yes, when it is properly designed and implemented, with the professional work and reporting the strategy requires. Tax is generally owed where you are resident (or, for Americans, where you are a citizen). Changing where you live and how you earn, within the rules of each country involved, is lawful planning. Hiding income or pretending to live somewhere you do not is not, and we do not do it.
Can you get my tax rate to 1%?
In many cases, yes, it may be possible, depending on your circumstances. The Global Strategy identifies the opportunities based on your citizenship, residence, income, business and assets, and the changes they require. U.S. citizens stay taxable in the United States wherever they live, so their plan works differently; see leaving the United States.
Do I have to move?
Some advantages require relocation, but much can be done without moving. We assess both against your goals.
Do I have to give up my citizenship?
Usually not. Canadians are taxed on residence, so they keep their passport. U.S. citizens are taxed on citizenship, which is why renunciation is sometimes part of an American plan, and why it is never the first step.
Which country is best?
It depends on the person: citizenship, income, business, family, lifestyle and how much time you are willing to spend there.
Why is the first step a paid service?
Because a useful answer depends on your facts in several countries at once. The Global Strategy Service pays for the preparation, research and follow-up that produce real recommendations. The strategy is sufficient for some clients, and the later stages are optional. If you choose to continue, the fee is credited toward the Plan of Action. If you are not sure yet, start with the calculator or send us your details.
Will you handle everything?
Yes, through implementation. We carry out the agreed plan with the relevant professionals and ask for your decisions, approvals and signatures when they are needed.
Where are your clients from?
Mostly the United States and Canada. Most establish their new main residence in Latin America or the Caribbean, and our work also covers Europe and Asia: banking, company formation and residency wherever they serve the plan.
Is what I read on this site advice for my situation?
No. The site is general information. One Percent Tax is an international consulting agency working with a network of professionals; it does not itself practice law or give legal or financial advice. Only an analysis of your own facts can tell you what applies to you.
What does the Global Strategy Service include?
A pre-meeting form review, a 60-minute strategy meeting, research and analysis of your case, and a 30-minute follow-up with recommendations and a quote, usually within two weeks and sometimes up to one month. The written Plan of Action and a formal technical tax opinion come later, if you continue. See the details.
What happens after the strategy?
For some clients the Global Strategy is all they need, and the later stages are optional. If you choose to continue, we prepare a detailed written Plan of Action and can then carry it out with the relevant professionals. Each stage is quoted after the strategy. If you choose to continue, the Global Strategy is credited toward the Plan of Action, and the Plan of Action toward Implementation.
Do you handle residency and citizenship applications?
We coordinate residency and citizenship planning with immigration professionals in the country, from determining eligibility to the final decision. For citizenship-by-investment programmes requiring authorised agents, applications are submitted through those agents. Approval always rests with the government, so no one can guarantee it.
Where is your team?
We are a fully remote team. Our specialists work from the countries our clients leave and the ones they move to, across Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, Europe and Asia.
