Guatemala: residence built on steady income
Pensioner and rentista routes to permanent residence, with clear income rules for you and your family, in the highlands of Central America.
Overview
Why people look at Guatemala
Guatemala offers permanent residence to people who live on a pension or on steady income generated outside the country, without working locally. The income rules are set by the Guatemalan Migration Institute and include an extra amount for each family member.
We prepare the residence application and family documentation with the relevant professionals in Guatemala and coordinate the relocation itself.
The move is also the moment to align your retirement or other income, investments, business interests and banking. Companies and asset-protection arrangements can sit in other jurisdictions as part of the overall plan.
At a glance
Guatemala in six lines
| Tax system | Immigration residence and tax residence are separate. How Guatemala would tax your pension, investment or business income is reviewed for your specific sources before you move. |
|---|---|
| Residency routes | Permanent residence as a pensioner or rentista, based on a minimum monthly income generated outside Guatemala. |
| Citizenship | Naturalization is a separate process with its own residence and other requirements. We map it if a passport is part of the goal. |
| Where companies, banks and trusts sit | Wherever they serve the plan. Companies, accounts and asset-protection structures can stay outside Guatemala. |
| Good fit for | Retirees and people living on steady foreign income who want a lower cost of living near North American time zones. |
| Watch out for | The income has to be continuous and shown again over time, and documents need authentication and translation. |
General information, not legal or tax advice. Immigration and tax rules, amounts and processing times change; we confirm the current requirements for your specific case during your Global Strategy.

How much income do I need for residence in Guatemala?
For the pensioner and rentista routes, the Guatemalan Migration Institute asks for at least US$1,250 a month for the main applicant, plus US$300 a month for each dependant, as checked September 2026. We confirm the current figures before anything is filed.
Can I work in Guatemala on this residence?
These routes are for people who live on a pension or on income from outside the country, not for local employment. If you plan to run a business, we look at how it should be structured and where.
Will moving to Guatemala end my taxes at home?
Your residence abroad and your tax position at home are separate questions. US citizens remain taxable in the United States wherever they live; see leaving the United States. Canadians who leave need to plan for departure tax and the end of Canadian residency; see leaving Canada.
Can my family come with me?
Yes. Dependants can be included, with the additional monthly income for each of them and their own documents.
